A 55-year-old man, James Steele, has been sentenced to five months in jail for keeping animals despite a court-imposed ban.
Steele, of Gobrana Road, Glenavy, Crumlin, appeared before Lisburn Court and was ordered to pay a £25 offender levy for breaching a disqualification order under the Welfare of Animals Act (NI) 2011.
The case began when DAERA officers inspected land belonging to Steele and found animals present. Further investigation revealed that four of the animals had been recently purchased by Steele, despite being prohibited from owning or keeping livestock.
A disqualification order is imposed following conviction for serious animal welfare offences, banning individuals from owning, keeping, or being involved in any arrangement concerning animals.
