The BBC is under scrutiny following allegations that it altered footage of US President Donald Trump’s speech from 6 January 2021 in a Panorama documentary broadcast just days before the 2024 presidential election.
A 19-page internal dossier written by Michael Prescott, a former member of the BBC’s standards committee, suggests that the broadcaster spliced together different excerpts of Trump’s speech to make it appear he provoked the Capitol riot.
“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol. And we’re gonna cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,”
According to Prescott’s claims, Panorama editors modified the quote to read:
“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you. We fight like hell.”
The Telegraph was the first to reveal details from the leaked report. In response, a BBC spokesperson said:
“While we don’t comment on leaked documents, when the BBC receives feedback it takes it seriously and considers it carefully.”
Allegations suggest the BBC edited Trump’s 6 January speech to portray him negatively in a Panorama episode, prompting internal and public criticism.
