The Caribbean sea lanes have long been used for both tourism and illegal activities. However, a recent change in US policy may be the start of a solution to the region's crime and violence.
On September 16, 2025, the US announced its nominee for ambassador to The Bahamas, former football star and entrepreneur Herschel Walker. Walker spoke before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, highlighting his business experience and its relevance to diplomacy.
"I know how to run a business, how to create jobs, how to make payroll. Those lessons translate into building relationships and building trust,"
Walker's nomination marks the first time the US has sent an ambassador to The Bahamas since 2011.
