From Mamma Mia to Amélie: The vitality of the musical

The Vitality of Musical Theatre

Big musical theatre shows, such as The Lion King, Matilda, and Wicked, show no signs of decline in popularity.

In Aotearoa, local and touring shows are well-received by audiences, despite the lack of a West End or Broadway.

Amélie the Musical

Amélie the Musical is set to premiere in Australasia in November in Poneke, produced by the alternative musical theatre company, Witch.

The musical, based on the popular film, first opened on Broadway in 2017 and the West End in 2019, and after a Covid-related delay, in 2021.

Amélie naturally focuses on the beloved mischievous dreamer Amelie Poulain of the popular film.

Rachel McSweeney will play the role of Amelie Poulain in the Wellington production.

Witch has produced a range of musicals, from familiar titles like Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods to lesser-known works like Carrie the Musical and a Broadway adaptation of Tolstoy's War and Peace.

Author's summary: Musical theatre remains popular with new shows emerging.
