Nanaimo's 2025 State of the Child Report reveals a significant childcare deficit, with only 29 available spaces for every 100 children.
The report, conducted by the Nanaimo Early Years Partnership, examines challenges in local services using statistics from 2020-24. The partnership comprises members from various organizations, including Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools, Island Health, and Vancouver Island University.
"Childcare is in crisis in the community,"
said Cheryl Booth, executive director of the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. Booth emphasized that Nanaimo is a fast-growing community that is not meeting the needs of this growth.
