Canada to Strengthen Criminal Code
Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced plans to strengthen the Criminal Code with new legislation.
The government plans to table the legislation next week to amend the Criminal Code for crimes committed by violent and repeat offenders, targeting those accused of serious crimes like:
- Violent auto theft
- Breaking and entering
- Human trafficking
- Violent assault
- Sexual assault
The legislation will include:
- Introducing "reverse-onus bail" for major crimes
- Imposing harsher penalties for organized retail theft
- Restricting conditional sentences for certain sexual offences
"Reverse-onus bail" and consecutive sentencing are key components of the new legislation.
The government also promises to hire 1,000 RCMP personnel Canada-wide.
