Breastfeeding Campaign Aims to Curb Breast Cancer Rates

The Indiana Black Breastfeeding Coalition has launched a statewide effort to raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding in preventing breast cancer.

Breast cancer affects thousands of women in Indiana every year, but experts say that breastfeeding can lower a woman's lifetime risk of breast cancer by up to 30%.

"We know that inflammation can cause disease, and so, when you do go ahead and breastfeed your baby, then it lowers that hormonal cascade and lowers that likelihood of inflammation,"

said Joi Crenshaw, president of the Indiana Black Breastfeeding Coalition and a certified professional midwife. She added that the longer a woman breastfeeds, the longer the benefits last.

Author's summary: Breastfeeding lowers breast cancer risk by up to 30%.
