Pet owners seeking financial assistance for spaying and neutering will not have access to this resource in 2026, according to the current Harrison County budget.
The county council has decided to eliminate the $40,000 annual fund as a cost-cutting measure. This decision was made during a budget hearing in September, after it was found that the $20 to $25 discount voucher was not being used frequently.
“Back when this program was originally started, you could get spay and neuter for around $100, so you were getting a quarter of it covered,”
Harrison County Council chair Kyle Nix stated, explaining the reasoning behind the decision. Only a little over half of the funds have been used so far in 2025.
