As President Donald Trump's Columbus Day proclamation pledges to "reclaim" the holiday honoring the Italian explorer, Native Americans in Nevada are renewing their call to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day.
A celebration they say better reflects their heritage and history, Indigenous Peoples' Day is seen as an alternative to Columbus Day.
"The idea of celebrating Columbus goes back in the United States really to the 300th anniversary of when he sailed back in 1792,"
said Michael Green, a professor of history at UNLV. Green also noted that Columbus' actions were harmful to Indigenous people, with some arguing that he was guilty of genocide.
