In South Dakota, it is still Native American Day, a declaration made by the governor's office over 30 years ago.
The recent change of the national holiday by President Trump has been met with frustration. Despite his efforts to broker peace in the Middle East, some Native Americans are wondering if he could do the same for them in the Midwest.
"We're celebrating today regardless of what anybody is saying,"
said one organizer. The overturning of Native American Day nationwide has also sparked reactions from organizers and participants.
"Very non-controversial, frankly, but some people would say it's controversial,"
said President Trump. "We're calling it Columbus Day. Yes."
