NASCAR Executive Appears To Inadvertently Reveal Changes To 2026 Cup Series Playoff Format
A recent statement may have inadvertently revealed changes to the 2026 Cup Series playoff format.
There has been discussion about whether NASCAR should abandon its playoffs and return to a 36-race points system. The postseason points format was first introduced in 2004 as the "Chase for the Nextel Cup".
Previously, the series awarded points based on finishing position, with the driver having the most points at the end of the season declared the champion.
Matt Kenseth dominated the points standings in 2003, winning only one race and locking up the championship before the final race, making the season finale essentially meaningless.
NASCAR adopted the playoff format in response to this issue.
