Botanist on Quest to Identify and Name Endangered Orchids

Pankaj Kumar has spent 25 years trekking through Asia's deepest forests looking for rare orchids and has discovered 38 species.

In 2012, Kumar kept a close watch on 23 small, wild plants in the forests of Southeast Asia, waiting for them to bloom to determine their species.

He waited patiently, hoping for the day they would reveal their identity.

After 10 months, a tiny white petal finally appeared in August 2013, and Kumar was almost certain it was an unidentified species.

However, to give this orchid a name, he would have to dissect the very flower he waited so long to see, which came with a heartbreaking realization.

Kumar's dedication to discovering and naming new orchid species is a testament to his passion for botany and conservation.

Author's summary: Botanist discovers new orchid species.
