Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter stated on Monday that Switzerland has not yet met the conditions required to recognize Palestine. She emphasized the importance of a permanent ceasefire and a stable government before any recognition can occur.
Responding to Anadolu's question during a press conference with the Foreign Press Association in Bern, Keller-Sutter said:
“We feel that there are some conditions that have to be fulfilled, like all the hostages must return home, and also the dead bodies. There must be a permanent ceasefire, there must be a plan for peace.”
She added recognition could happen one day when these conditions, including stable governance and elections, are met.
Keller-Sutter addressed whether Switzerland considers the situation in Gaza to meet genocide criteria:
“Switzerland condemns every violation of international law. So we condemned the disproportionate intervention of Israel, as well as the terrorist attack of Hamas.”
She noted that judgments on genocide will be determined by international courts.
Regarding reports that Zurich canton refused to accept wounded children from Gaza for medical treatment, Keller-Sutter clarified authority matters:
“It’s up to cantons to decide,”
meaning such decisions fall under cantonal jurisdiction rather than the federal government.
Switzerland remains cautious on Palestinian recognition, prioritizing peace, justice, and stability before taking diplomatic steps.
