Thunder Bay saw a significant boost for its local curling clubs thanks to the 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts held at Fort William Gardens. Proceeds from the national women’s curling championship — including funds from the 50/50 draw and 10% of ticket sales — were distributed among three local clubs.
Each club received a cheque for $52,940, aimed to support the growth of curling at the grassroots level in Thunder Bay.
“Each club will get just under $53,000, which will go a long way in helping curling at the grassroots level,” said Diane Imrie, co-chair of the local organizing committee. “We had a great curling event and a legacy of the event is there.”
Rick Lang, co-chair and two-time world champion, emphasized the personal value of giving back to the sport and community.
“Curling’s been a part of my life for more years than I want to know and the curling community in Thunder Bay has been really good to me. I think this is a chance to volunteer and pay back the community, and really help the clubs out.”
The funding from the tournament marks an important step in sustaining and expanding curling activities in the region.
The Scotties Tournament’s proceeds, nearly $53,000 per club, provide crucial support for grassroots curling development in Thunder Bay, reflecting the event’s legacy and community spirit.
