Rod Stewart shares two children with Penny Lancaster, though he was initially hesitant about having more kids when they met in the 1990s. Penny, 54, opened up about their home life and the challenges they faced with their eldest son.
Penny Lancaster and Rod Stewart, 80, celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary earlier this year. They first met in 1999, their relationship developing over time. Rod proposed in 2005 during a romantic trip to Paris, and they were married in 2007 at the medieval monastery La Cervara in Portofino, Italy. Together, they have two sons: Alastair and Aiden.
After Alastair's birth, Rod named his tour the Alastair Wallace Stewart Tour, scheduling flights around the baby's naps. During this time, Penny kept Alastair’s Moses basket beside their bed. However, the baby's colic caused her great distress.
“Every afternoon at exactly 4pm he’d give a shrill scream that sounded as though he was dying.”
In her book Someone Like Me, Penny describes how only the sound of Rod’s Great American Songbook collection could soothe their son. She believes the music reminded Alastair of the safety and comfort of the womb, recalling how she once listened to Rod recording while pregnant.
“In the end the only thing that would calm him was the sound of Rod’s Great American Songbook collection gently playing. I can only think that hearing it took Alastair back to the security of the womb, as I’d been in the studio to listen to Rod recording when I’d been pregnant.”
This insight reveals a tender and personal side of their family life amidst the challenges of parenthood and touring.
