The Pittsburgh Steelers’ dominant defensive showing against the Indianapolis Colts made veteran coach Dick LeBeau proud. The event also marked a long-awaited first meeting between LeBeau and T.J. Watt.
Returning to Pittsburgh for the 20th anniversary celebration of the 2005 Super Bowl XL champions, LeBeau was honored on the field alongside several former Steelers. Watt finally had a chance to meet the man who helped shape the franchise’s defensive legacy.
“It took nine years, but I’m glad,” Watt told WMBS’ George Von Benko. “Obviously he’s a busy guy, but meeting the legend himself was very surreal.”
LeBeau’s final season coaching in Pittsburgh was 2014, while Watt didn’t join the NFL until 2017. LeBeau’s last coaching job came that same year with the Tennessee Titans as their defensive coordinator. Coincidentally, Pittsburgh faced Tennessee that season, but the two never crossed paths after the game.
Among the returning players at Week 10’s ceremony were Ben Roethlisberger, Jerome Bettis, and Aaron Smith, all celebrated during the halftime tribute.
“Anytime those guys come back, it’s awesome,” Watt said. “Being recognized for their Super Bowl and seeing how close-knit they remain means a lot.”
It took years of missed timing, but T.J. Watt finally met Steelers legend Dick LeBeau during the Super Bowl XL reunion, connecting two generations of Pittsburgh’s defensive greatness.
