Brazil: Tornado Devastates Paraná, Killing Six

An unusually intense tornado struck the southern Brazilian state of Paraná on Friday evening, leaving six people dead and more than 400 injured, according to local authorities. The city of Bela Vista do Iguaçu on the Iguazu River suffered the worst damage, with over half of its urban area experiencing collapsed roofs and severe structural destruction.

Many roads were blocked, numerous power lines were destroyed, and several neighborhoods remain without electricity. The state’s civil protection agency reported that nearly 1,000 residents have been displaced from their homes. The nearby city of Guarapuava also experienced partial damage due to the strong winds.

According to the Paraná weather monitoring service, wind speeds during the tornado reached between 180 and 250 km/h, an intensity rarely recorded in this region. Rescue teams, including firefighters, the Red Cross, and local volunteers, continue to search for missing persons and provide temporary shelters for displaced families.

Government Response

The Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann, and the acting Minister of Health, Adriano Massuda, visited the affected areas on Saturday to coordinate emergency efforts and evaluate reconstruction needs.

“We will continue to assist the people of Paraná and provide them with all the necessary aid,” said President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on X (formerly Twitter).

Government agencies remain deployed to oversee relief operations and ensure recovery for the affected communities.
