Typhoon Uwan Nears the Philippines: Could This Be the Strongest Storm of the Year?

Typhoon Uwan has intensified rapidly as it moves toward the Philippines, triggering alerts of strong winds, heavy rains, and potentially deadly conditions. Forecasters warn it could become one of the most powerful storms of 2025.

Storm Development and Current Position

The system, initially named Fung-wong, strengthened into a severe tropical storm and is closing in on the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). As of Friday, it was positioned about 1,470 kilometres east of Eastern Visayas, still outside PAR limits.

The storm currently packs sustained winds of 95 kilometres per hour and gusts reaching 115 kilometres per hour, moving northwestward at 10 kilometres per hour.

Forecast and Impact

Once inside the PAR, expected by midnight or early Saturday, the storm will be renamed Uwan, which means “rain” in Cebuano. Meteorologists predict potential landfall near or at peak intensity over Northern or Central Luzon on 10 November 2025.

“The rapid intensification of the system could produce life-threatening conditions across large portions of Luzon,” meteorologists warned.

Preparedness and Government Response

Disaster officials have advised residents along the projected path to make early preparations. Warnings are expected to be raised by Saturday morning for areas in eastern Luzon and parts of the Visayas.
