Metro Manila raised its disaster alert level to Red at 5 p.m. on Friday, as Super Typhoon Uwan intensified and approached Luzon with the potential for Signal No. 4 winds. Authorities mobilized rescue equipment and personnel throughout the capital region to prepare for heavy rains and widespread flooding expected from Sunday to Tuesday.
The Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC), led by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes, declared the highest state of alert. The storm could bring winds spanning 720 kilometers and torrential rain across the region.
“This is our highest state of readiness,” said Office of Civil Defense-NCR Director George F. Keyser during the MMDRRMC emergency meeting.
“We are not ruling out Signal No. 4 in the NCR as the volume of rain could be unprecedented, even if the eye makes landfall far north,” he added.
The Red Alert status requires mandatory coordination between all 17 local government units in Metro Manila and relevant national government agencies to ensure unified disaster response measures.
“Even if it’s just wind under Signal 3, we are not exactly sure of the rain volume,” officials noted.
Metro Manila declares a Red Alert as Super Typhoon Uwan nears, prompting full-scale disaster readiness and region-wide coordination ahead of possibly record rainfall and Signal No. 4 winds.
