‘Stumble’ Review: NBC Doubles Down on Mockumentaries With Spirited Sitcom About Junior College Cheerleading

Jenn Lyon, Taran Killam, and Kristin Chenoweth star in NBC's new mockumentary comedy, Stumble. Fans of the 2000 teen cult classic Bring It On will appreciate its cheerleading theme, highlighted by the iconic chant, “I’m sexy, I’m cute! I’m everything you’re not…”.

Stumble offers a quirky and humorous take on the competitive world of college cheerleading, including the intense injuries and setbacks cheerleaders face. The show follows Courteney Potter (played by Jenn Lyon, known from Claws), a deadpan cheerleading coach who is abruptly fired from Sammy Davis Sr. Junior College in Wichita Flats, Texas, after a viral video captures a controversial victory party involving alcohol and a "Best Booty" award.

Courteney then lands a new coaching role at a junior college in the fictional town of Heådltston, Oklahoma — a town famous for its candy-button factory but lacking a cheerleading team. Despite the odd town name that leaves everyone stumped, Courteney begins her hunt for new cheerleaders, searching "high and low — mostly low."

Only the first two episodes have been released for review, but one highlight is the guest appearance by Jeff Hiller, fresh off an Emmy win for Somebody Somewhere, playing the factory owner Augustus.

“If you’re one of the fans who can recite the entire cheeky opening cheer from the 2000 teen cult classic flick ‘Bring It On’ ('I’m sexy, I’m cute! I’m everything you’re not…'), you deserve a spirit stick.”
“Courteney starts searching high and low — mostly low — for her next group of would-be champs.”

Author's summary: Stumble refreshes the mockumentary sitcom format with a fresh, deadpan take on junior college cheerleading, blending humor and heart through its quirky characters and spirited storytelling.
