Continuing Indigo’s new Comfort Read Series, I want to share my personal connection with J.R.R. Tolkien’s timeless fantasy, The Hobbit. This book has been a comforting and inspiring companion through my life journey.
For those new to Tolkien’s Middle Earth, The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins, a small creature of Tolkien’s creation who prefers comfort and peace. Bilbo joins a group of displaced dwarves, persuaded by the wizard Gandalf, to reclaim their ancestral home, Erebor, from the greedy dragon Smaug.
Along the way, Bilbo and his companions encounter elves, trolls, enchanted swords, and a mysterious magical ring. Once the quest ends, Bilbo returns home and begins recording his journey.
As a shy child captivated by magical worlds, I related deeply to Bilbo. Though he wasn’t a warrior or of noble birth, Tolkien’s story reveals that anyone can show courage and make a difference. This helped me embrace my introverted nature.
“Like Bilbo, my ideal evening is curled up at home with good food and a book, yet seeing my personality reflected in literature made me feel seen and inspired to dream.”
Bilbo’s journey reminds us that bravery comes in many forms, and that quiet strength can lead to remarkable adventures.
Author’s summary: This reflection shows how The Hobbit inspires introverted readers by portraying bravery and adventure through a relatable, home-loving protagonist.
