Matthew Von Der Ahe is an actor and activist from the San Fernando Valley who promotes inclusion for people with disabilities. Diagnosed with Down syndrome, he has overcome societal challenges to build a career in film and television.
At age seven, Matthew was enrolled in acting classes to help with socialization. This experience sparked his passion for the craft, leading him to pursue auditions. Despite facing industry barriers and stereotypes about his abilities, he remained determined.
In 2023, Von Der Ahe appeared as Craig in the film Champions, starring alongside Woody Harrelson. The story follows a minor-league basketball coach sentenced to community service after a DUI, who must coach a team of players with intellectual disabilities preparing for the Special Olympics.
Director Farrelly worked closely with actors with intellectual disabilities, including Matthew, to develop their acting and basketball skills for the movie.
That same year, Matthew also featured in a McDonald’s Super Bowl commercial with rapper and actress Cardi B.
In October, the “Viz-Ability” pop-up gallery was held at Radford Studio Center in Studio City. This event celebrated disabled cast, crew, and filmmakers, promoting visibility and inclusion in the entertainment industry. Matthew was among the showcased talents in this red carpet reception.
“He’s given me a different lens to see the world,” said his mother, Emmy, reflecting on Matthew’s impact.
His story challenges common stereotypes and highlights the essential contributions of actors with disabilities.
