Who’s Running for Mayor in Wilmington?

Three candidates are competing for Wilmington’s mayoral seat in the upcoming two-year term. The election will decide whether the city continues under its long-serving mayor or turns toward new leadership.

Bill Saffo

Democratic incumbent Bill Saffo seeks to extend his 19-year run as Wilmington’s mayor. He first joined the City Council in 2003 and became mayor in 2006 after Spence Broadhurst vacated the position.

Jonathan Barfield Jr.

Jonathan Barfield Jr., also a Democrat, aims to become Wilmington’s first Black mayor. He brings years of community involvement and public service experience to his campaign.

Billy Craig

Republican-backed challenger Billy Craig, a former police officer and political newcomer, presents himself as an alternative for voters seeking change.

Election Details

The election takes place on November 16, following 125 hours of early voting that ended on November 1, according to the New Hanover County Board of Elections.

“If there’s a tie, a runoff election will be held, and if that runoff also ends in a tie, the Board of Elections will determine the winner by lot, typically by flipping a coin,” said Jessica O’Neill, interim deputy director of the New Hanover County Board of Elections.

Additionally, a recount may be requested if the vote difference between candidates is 1% or less, O’Neill noted.

Summary

Wilmington voters will choose between continuity under Bill Saffo or new leadership from Jonathan Barfield Jr. or Billy Craig in the city’s mayoral race.
