After twelve years on death row in Bali for drug trafficking, 69-year-old Lindsay Sandiford was seen leaving Kerobokan Prison in a wheelchair. She had been imprisoned for smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine from Bangkok to Bali.
Upon returning to Britain, Indonesian authorities suggested that she might face incarceration again. Indonesia's deputy minister for immigration and correctional coordination stated to the Mirror:
“In England, she will remain in prison.”
The UK Foreign Office has not confirmed or denied this statement. Sandiford was released from her cell shortly after 2pm GMT and left with another British prisoner, 35-year-old Shahab Shahabadi, who was serving a life term for drug offences. Both were presented to local media before being handed over to British diplomats for their flight home.
Wearing a face mask and avoiding photographers, Sandiford was escorted to Denpasar International Airport. She flew to London via Doha on a Qatar Airways flight—the same airport where, in 2012, she had been publicly displayed beside a table of seized cocaine while wearing orange prison clothes.
After serving 12 years on death row in Bali for smuggling cocaine, Lindsay Sandiford returned to Britain amid uncertainty over whether she will face further imprisonment.
