Bottega Veneta: Jacob Elordi stars in Duane Michals short film

Bottega Veneta: Jacob Elordi in Duane Michals’ “What Are Dreams”

Australian actor Jacob Elordi, brand ambassador for Bottega Veneta since 2024, stars in the house’s new creative project titled “What Are Dreams.” The work includes both a short film and a series of photographs conceived by American artist Duane Michals.

Filmed in black and white at Michals’s home in New York, the series draws from the photographer’s enduring fascination with Surrealism. According to Bottega Veneta, the project aims to explore the realms of the unconscious, the imaginary, and the uncanny through poetic imagery.

The house explained: “Shot in black and white at Michals’s home in New York, the project springs from the artist’s deep connection to Surrealism and seeks to explore the unconscious, the imaginary and the uncanny.”

In the short film, Elordi recites the poem “What Are Dreams” by Michals, originally published in his 2001 photobook “Questions Without Answers.” The poem, which gives the project its name, reflects on the mysterious “midnight movies of the mind… in which things seem familiar, yet not quite the same.”

The accompanying twelve-photograph series captures Elordi in evocative, dreamlike compositions characteristic of Michals’s visual style, recognizable since the 1960s. Many elements recall the influence of Surrealist masters Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, whose works deeply inspired Michals’s approach to photography.

Author’s summary: The “What Are Dreams” project merges surreal imagery, poetic reflection, and Jacob Elordi’s performance to embody Duane Michals’s lifelong exploration of the subconscious in art.
