Veteran center David Kampf has temporarily stepped away from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies as he evaluates his professional future. The Toronto Maple Leafs attempted to find a new team for him over the offseason, but no trade materialized. Consequently, he was placed on waivers during training camp and, after clearing, was assigned to the Marlies.
Just over two years ago, General Manager Brad Treliving signed Kampf to a four-year, $9.6 million contract, making this turn of events unexpected. Originally, the plan was for Kampf to remain a steady fourth-line center, contributing at faceoffs and on the penalty kill. However, under coach Craig Berube, his role diminished, and less expensive players have since taken over his lineup spot.
This season, Kampf appeared in only four of seven games for the Marlies and did not play in their road matchup in Chicago. According to a report by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman,
“The veteran is taking a few days to think about his future.”
In recent seasons, several players have chosen to leave guaranteed contracts behind in pursuit of better NHL opportunities or a potential return to the league. Notable examples include Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina. Kampf may be considering a similar decision, though walking away would mean giving up more than $3 million still owed to him in salary and bonuses through next season.
David Kampf, once viewed as a reliable depth center for Toronto, now faces a career crossroads after his diminished NHL role and uncertain AHL future.
