The PGA Tour has decided not to issue releases to any members who participate in the upcoming LIV Golf Promotions event in Florida. This decision reaffirms the ongoing rivalry between the two tours.
LIV Golf recently announced that its Promotions event, where the top two finishers will earn membership for the 2026 season, will take place at Black Diamond Resort in Florida from January 8–11. The location was likely chosen to attract more professional golfers, but it has instead created new complications for players affiliated with PGA-related tours.
According to Golf Digest, which confirmed reports from Sports Illustrated, a spokesperson for the PGA Tour stated that because the LIV event is being held in North America, it is classified under PGA Tour rules as an unauthorized event.
“Any PGA Tour member who competes in the LIV Golf Promotions event will be subject to disciplinary action.”
The same regulations also apply to non-members: anyone who competes in the LIV Golf Promotions event could face a one-year suspension from participating in PGA Tour–sanctioned tournaments, including Monday qualifiers and sponsor exemptions.
The announcement from the PGA Tour arrived just a day after LIV Golf outlined details for the third edition of its Promotions event, signaling that the competitive tension between the two organizations remains as strong as ever.
