Boxing champion Claressa Shields has questioned Jake Paul’s decision to cancel his fight with Gervonta “Tank” Davis, arguing that his reasoning overlooks what many in boxing have long known about Davis’ past legal troubles.
The highly anticipated match was set for November 14 in Miami, but it was abruptly canceled after new allegations emerged against Davis. Reports claim Davis attacked a woman at Tootsie’s Cabaret, a strip club in Miami Gardens, on October 27. A complaint filed in Miami-Dade County alleges he choked and struck a VIP cocktail waitress during the incident.
In response, Jake Paul released a statement announcing he would no longer go ahead with the event, condemning Davis as
“a walking human piece of garbage”
and declaring that he refused to
“give a woman abuser a platform.”
The move drew mixed reactions. While some praised Paul for taking a moral stance, others questioned the timing, noting that Davis’ legal issues have been well known for years. Shields expressed skepticism over Paul’s newfound outrage, saying on X Spaces that his reaction seemed disingenuous given that everyone was already aware of Davis’ past.
“I have a few things to say about that,”
she remarked, casting doubt on the sincerity of Paul’s decision.
