South Carolina native Craig Melvin will highlight the Midlands in a segment airing on Thursday's “Today” show. Melvin gave a preview on Wednesday, shared on local station WIS's Facebook page.
“Welcome to my hometown, Columbia, S.C. Join me for a little trip down memory lane. I’m going to bring you back here to my childhood with my kid brother, introduce you to some of my favorite people and places that really sort of shaped me, molded me. And of course, there will be food.”
In the video, Melvin is seen at the newly renovated Finlay Park in downtown Columbia. The segment includes scenes of local dining, a visit to a barber shop, and an interview with Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, who was recently re-elected.
Melvin returned to Columbia nearly a year after being named co-host of NBC’s “Today” show, replacing Hoda Kotb, following 13 years with NBC News. Many in Columbia remember him from his early career at WIS, the local NBC affiliate station.
He began working at WIS while still attending Columbia High School and eventually became the station's nightly news anchor. Even after moving to national television, Melvin has frequently celebrated his home state and roots.
