Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin has explained why the World Club Challenge will take place at the home ground of their rivals, Hull FC. He emphasized that the priority was always to keep the event in Hull, highlighting the city's strong rugby league culture.
The match is set to feature the two best club sides in world rugby league at Hull FC's MKM Stadium, a decision Lakin says makes financial sense and meets the expected high demand from fans of both teams.
Initially, there were thoughts about moving the game to Elland Road, but it became clear that Hull KR's home, Craven Park, was too small to accommodate the event. This left the MKM Stadium as the only suitable option.
“It was really important for people to try to retain it in the city. It’s a huge rugby league city and it’ll be fantastic for us to keep it in Hull,” Lakin told Love Rugby League.
“It was very quickly a no-brainer that we needed to move it. Financial reasons, supply and demand, it’s the biggest domestic game and you want as many people to experience it as possible. The players we have in our side, they want to play on the biggest stage possible.”
He added that Craven Park was not a viable option financially because it would not support the visiting Brisbane Broncos adequately.
Summary: Hull KR’s CEO prioritizes hosting the World Club Challenge in Hull, opting for the MKM Stadium to meet financial and capacity needs while embracing the city’s rugby culture.
