From St Kilda to Kings Cross, overlooking the MCG and stretching across the outback, no Australian songwriter has portrayed life as vividly as Paul Kelly. As he turns 70, this beloved national artist is releasing his 30th studio album, fittingly titled 70.
Kelly shares that reaching this milestone age requires a bit of luck. He remarked,
"You've got to live that long. Everything else after that is, you know, gravy."
He also expresses that he has never felt happier or performed better.
Even after decades in music, Kelly continues writing and performing. He describes his songwriting as a process of collecting meaningful phrases from everyday life. He explained,
"If I read something, I think 'that's a good line', or a line of poetry or something from a book, or just general conversation that's got a good ring to it, I'll write it down."
One example is the phrase "I've done all the dumb things", which he heard at the Corner Hotel pub in Richmond.
Paul Kelly's album 70 will be available starting tomorrow.
