This year, at least 16 Brown students are applying to dental school, and five are applying to veterinary school. Many arrive at Brown aiming for careers in health care. While some pursue medical school, others choose less common paths such as dentistry and veterinary science.
According to Ginger Fisher, Associate Dean of the College for Preprofessional Advising, Health Careers Advising encourages students to “think broadly” about health care careers. She stated,
“While an MD is one path to a fulfilling career supporting the health of others, it is really just one of many such careers.”
Matthew Fang ’28 initially saw dental school as an “easier route” compared to medical school. However, he later realized the application process is “pretty intense.” Dental and medical schools share similar requirements, including science courses, research, volunteering, and clinical experience.
Pre-dental students at Brown often find a supportive community as they prepare for their careers. This network helps them navigate challenges unique to the dental school path.
Brown’s approach highlights diverse opportunities in health careers beyond just becoming a medical doctor.
Author’s summary: Brown students exploring dental and veterinary careers benefit from broad advising, rigorous preparation, and supportive communities that enrich their journey into healthcare fields.
