Residents in the Moss Park area regained electricity after an outage that began at 8:11 a.m. Wednesday. Toronto Hydro confirmed the power was fully restored by 1 p.m. Thursday.
"Power has now been restored to all customers. We sincerely thank everyone for your patience as our crews worked through these extensive and complex repairs," Toronto Hydro stated on social media.
The outage impacted almost 600 customers within the Moss Park region, spanning from Queen Street East and Jarvis Street to Parliament Street and Front Street East.
Initially, more than 1,000 customers lost power on Wednesday morning, with restoration originally expected by 8:30 p.m. that day.
Toronto Hydro spokesperson Brie Davis explained that the number of affected residents might be much higher than reported, as the company counts customers by meters.
“In some cases, condos and buildings are fed by a single bulk meter. Because of this, our outage map reflects one meter as one customer, even though many residents may be impacted,” Davis wrote in an email.
Toronto Hydro crews identified the outage as resulting from a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site, unrelated to Hydro activities.
"The work that caused the dig-in is unrelated to Toronto Hydro but resulted in damage to our infrastructure. Repairing this damage required our crews to excavate 14 feet underground in order to access the impacted area," Davis said.
The Moss Park power outage, caused by external construction activity damaging infrastructure, lasted almost 29 hours before full restoration, with Toronto Hydro thanking customers for their patience.
