Artist Bianca Broxton Honors Enslaved Woman Belinda Sutton

Artist Bianca Broxton returned to Medford to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution by remembering Belinda Sutton, an enslaved woman.

In a dimly lit room, Broxton performed for guests from the Medford area, wearing a floor-length gown and a white veil to represent the lost records of enslaved people.

The repetition of names of enslaved women and girls, including "Kate, Mira, Nan, Nancy, Nancy, Nanny, Negro Girl, Negro Woman, Phebe, Present, Prine, Priscilla …", was almost hypnotic.

Author's summary: Bianca Broxton performs to honor enslaved woman.
