A historic win for victims of rape has been achieved in Malawi, as the High Court has ruled in favor of safe abortions for rape survivors.
The court upheld Section 19 of the Gender Equality Act, stating that girls who become pregnant due to rape or defilement have the legal right to access safe abortion services in hospitals.
Denying such victims access to abortion violates their sexual and reproductive health rights.
This decision follows a case filed by a minor who was denied a safe abortion after becoming pregnant as a result of sexual violence.
