Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Travels to Hamilton

Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Matthew Shoemaker travelled to ports on Lake Ontario and Lake Erie on Oct. 22 as part of the city’s vision to build a new Port of Algoma.

Accompanied by a delegation, the mayor met with officials of the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) and visited HOPA facilities in Hamilton and Port Colborne.

'This partnership gives us a real path forward to come up with the right plan for a port project,' said Matthew Shoemaker

The Sault has entered a development proposal with HOPA aimed at building a multimodal marine facility as part of a “nation-building north-south trade corridor.”

The delegation included Tom Vair, the Sault’s chief administrative officer; Brent Lamming, deputy CAO for community development and enterprise services; and Rick Van Staveren, director of economic development.
