Florida Bishops Plea to Governor
Florida's Catholic bishops wrote to Gov. Ron DeSantis, urging him to stay the execution of Samuel "Sammy" Smithers, scheduled for Oct. 14.
“There is a way to punish without ending another human life: life-long incarceration without the possibility of parole,”
The Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops stated, emphasizing that
“Every human life, given by God, is sacred. The death penalty is unnecessary.”
- Samuel "Sammy" Smithers, 72, was convicted and sentenced to death in 1996.
- He was found guilty of the murders of Christy Cowan, 31, and Denise Roach, 24.
