Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed his appeal for stronger Western pressure on the Kremlin as the death toll increased from recent Russian strikes. Authorities faced major challenges restoring power after attacks targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Many areas in Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, experienced extensive power outages. State energy provider Ukrenergo reported power reductions lasting 8 to 16 hours on November 9, with plans to continue consumption restrictions on November 10.
"The reason for the introduction of restrictions is the consequences of massive Russian missile and drone attacks on energy facilities," said Ukrenergo.
"It is difficult to recall such a [large] number of direct strikes on energy facilities since the beginning of the invasion," Ukrenergo spokeswoman Svitlana Hrynchuk told Ukrainian media.
In his nightly address, President Zelenskyy emphasized the hard work of repair crews, stating they were "working almost around the clock in most regions." He added, "Restoration efforts are ongoing, and although the situation is difficult, thousands of people are involved in stabilizing the system and repairing the damage."
Even before cold weather arrived, Russia intensified attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, natural gas facilities, and pipelines. The aim was to freeze the population and lower morale.
Russian strikes severely damaged Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing widespread outages as repair crews race to restore power under difficult conditions.
