Anduril’s YFQ-44A Begins Flight Testing After 556 Days, Advancing U.S. Air Force Autonomy Efforts

Anduril has initiated flight testing of its YFQ-44A Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), a semi-autonomous air platform created in collaboration with the United States Air Force. The project aims to strengthen air superiority in highly contested environments while showcasing advancements in autonomous combat technologies.

The YFQ-44A can operate either alongside crewed aircraft or independently. Its autonomy is intended to improve survivability, combat performance, and mission effectiveness across diverse scenarios.

“Flight testing is where we prove to ourselves, to the Air Force, to our allies, and to our adversaries that these proclamations about game-changing technology go beyond words,” said Jason Levin, SVP of Engineering, Air Dominance & Strike.

From its first flight onward, the YFQ-44A functions semi-autonomously, handling mission execution, throttle control, and flight management without relying on real-time human input.

“Our aircraft is ushering in this new paradigm with incredible technical precision: it executes a mission plan on its own, manages flight control and throttle adjustment independent of human command, and returns to land at the push of a button,” Levin added.

The platform features a fully autonomous software suite capable of processing combat data, recognizing potential targets, and executing tactical responses in real time. It can also coordinate logistical and maintenance operations on the ground, reinforcing its role as a versatile and battle-ready system.

“In short, YFQ-44A’s autonomy is what makes it more than just a flying machine, but one that’s ready to fight,” Levin said.
