A woman and a young child tragically lost their lives after falling into a waterway in southeast Melbourne on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred at Dandenong Creek, near Allan Street in Dandenong, around 3:45 p.m. According to authorities, the mother entered the water in an attempt to save the child, but both were soon overwhelmed by the current.
Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene and found both victims unconscious. Rescuers performed CPR, but despite their efforts, neither the woman nor the child could be revived.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner. The identities of the woman and child have not yet been confirmed.
