Switzerland remains the global leader in digital competitiveness for 2025, surpassing the United States and Singapore. This affirms its position as one of the most technologically advanced digital economies worldwide.
The ranking, released annually by the Lausanne-based Institute for Management Development (IMD), evaluates 69 economies based on their capacity to adopt and utilize digital technologies for economic and social progress.
“Digitally speaking, Switzerland has experienced two important developments so far this year: the cataclysmic effects of tariff changes and the approval of e-ID by a razor-thin margin (50.4% in favor),” said Arturo Bris, Director of IMD’s World Competitiveness Center (WCC).
“It’s clear that the Swiss aren’t as prepared as we might have hoped to embrace the challenges of technology today.”
IMD experts caution that increasing trade fragmentation and evolving regulatory frameworks could undermine Switzerland's leading position in the near future. Trade tensions are creating barriers impacting data flows, technical standards, and investment decisions, all critical factors for digital competitiveness on a global scale.
The 2025 IMD report highlights Switzerland’s digital leadership while warning about risks from global trade uncertainties and shifting regulations that could hinder future progress.
Author’s note: Switzerland’s digital edge is strong but faces emerging challenges from trade barriers and policy shifts that require urgent attention.
