Media sources report that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is nearing a deal with Canada Post that may compromise workers’ jobs and conditions significantly. Bargaining resumed on Monday, November 3, with a statement from CUPW expressing appreciation for a government-appointed mediator’s help.
The union expressed readiness to "overcome the disagreements between the parties" and "secure ratifiable collective agreements at the bargaining table."
In another statement, CUPW respectfully requested the Liberal government, which supports plans to cut two-thirds of Canada Post's workforce of 55,000, to "ensure that any decisions... are made... with Union input."
The ongoing negotiations between CUPW and Canada Post under a government viewed as hostile raise serious concerns for postal workers’ future job security and conditions.
