Iconic Aussie Politician Graham “Richo” Richardson Dies Aged 76

Graham “Richo” Richardson, former Labor senator, powerbroker, and political commentator, has passed away at the age of 76. Tributes came in following his death just days after he vowed to live until his son completed his HSC exams.

Political Career

Richardson served as a cabinet minister during the Hawke and Keating governments and was a long-time Labor senator representing New South Wales throughout his parliamentary tenure. He played a pivotal role in the 1991 Labor Party leadership change that replaced Prime Minister Bob Hawke with Treasurer Paul Keating.

Later Life and Death

After leaving politics, Richardson became a political commentator and was a regular voice on Sky News Australia. He passed away early Saturday after struggling with health problems over several years.

Health and Final Promise

Despite his poor health, he was determined to see his son D’Arcy finish his HSC exams. Ben Fordham, host on 2GB, shared:

“When he had his big health challenge, he said to his wife Amanda, ‘I’m going to live till I see Darcy finish exams and his HSC’.”

D’Arcy completed his final HSC exam, French, on Thursday. Richardson died the following morning. Fordham added that Richardson had battled influenza, pneumonia, and had been undergoing dialysis.

Summary

Graham Richardson’s legacy as a key Labor figure and devoted father remains impactful, marked by his political influence and personal resilience in the face of illness.
