Careful matchmaking will power Sunday’s inclusive event. On November 9, Blind Fitness will field 18 blind and low-vision athletes as part of a team of about 40 participants for the Santa Barbara Half-Marathon and 5K. This marks the third year of their partnership with Wayfinder Family Services and United in Stride.
Blind Fitness expertly combines skill and partnership to enable athletes with visual impairments to engage fully in athletic events.
“We’re excited to see the community come together again to celebrate the power of connection through movement,” said Tania Isaac-Dutton, executive director of Blind Fitness. “Events like this remind us that inclusion isn’t just about access — it’s about belonging, visibility, and joy.”
The key to success lies in the matchmaking process. Brian Walters, the lead registration coordinator, is an experienced runner who carefully pairs guides and athletes. He ensures that the rhythm between partners is balanced, so neither feels burdened.
“We try to pair new or less-experienced guides with participants who are also attending for the first time, creating a sense of equal partnership,” explained Isaac-Dutton.
This thoughtful approach fosters an inclusive and empowering environment for all involved.
