Lindsay Sandiford, 69, convicted 13 years ago for smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine into Bali, has arrived at Heathrow's Terminal 4.
The British grandmother spent over a decade on death row in Indonesia before returning to the UK on Friday. She was seen in a wheelchair, wearing black leggings and a green cardigan, covering her face with her clothing.
Sandiford left Indonesia earlier the same day after a diplomatic agreement between Jakarta and London allowed her repatriation on humanitarian grounds, avoiding execution. The British government reportedly spent £600 on her flight ticket home.
Before her departure, Sandiford appeared at a handover ceremony at Kerobokan Prison alongside Shabab Shahabadi, 35, another British inmate serving a life sentence for drug offenses. Both were transported to Denpasar International Airport and were expected to meet British Ambassador Dominic Jeremy before their flight.
"Lindsay Sandiford and Shahab Shahabadi have serious health conditions and are being repatriated on humanitarian grounds," said Matthew Downing, UK's deputy ambassador to Indonesia, during a news conference.
Author's summary: Lindsay Sandiford, after more than a decade on Indonesia's death row, has returned to the UK through a humanitarian repatriation deal due to serious health issues.
