Jacob Elordi has addressed the public's response to a controversial bathtub scene in the 2023 thriller Saltburn, calling the reactions "prudish."
In a notable scene directed by Emerald Fennell, Oliver (Barry Keoghan) drinks bathwater after secretly watching Felix (Elordi) masturbate in the tub. This moment quickly drew attention online and even inspired a novelty "Jacob Elordi’s Bathwater" candle.
Speaking on Entertainment Weekly's Awardist podcast, Elordi expressed his surprise at the shock some viewers showed, interpreting it as a sign of societal prudishness regarding sexual content in films.
"I actually think it shows me just how, I guess, prudish we are."
He pointed out that, compared to this scene, many movies contain far more graphic and extreme moments without similar backlash.
"There's far more extreme things in cinema that I've seen, far more graphic."
Elordi also highlighted the paradox of audiences readily consuming violent content in entertainment while reacting strongly to sexual scenes like the one in Saltburn.
"There's more alarming things in the top 10 streamed remakes of crime documentaries on every streaming platform."
Jacob Elordi critiques the overly sensitive reaction to sexual content in Saltburn, contrasting it with the audience’s acceptance of graphic violence in popular media.
