Hungary will allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to enter the country for a planned summit with US President Donald Trump in Budapest, announced Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Friday.
Putin currently faces an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes. Despite this, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared in April his government’s plan to withdraw from the ICC. Orbán recently welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Budapest, despite Netanyahu also facing an ICC warrant for war crimes related to Gaza.
Hungary will maintain that these ICC warrants have no legal effect on its soil.
Trump revealed on Thursday his intention to meet with Putin in the Hungarian capital, aiming to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Szijjarto mentioned that summit dates will be considered following upcoming meetings between US and Russian foreign ministers scheduled for next week.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump is set to discuss the potential supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a White House meeting on Friday.
