Last month, President Donald Trump announced plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, nearly a week after the announcement, the proposed summit was postponed indefinitely.
During a meeting at the White House with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, President Trump addressed questions regarding a potential meeting with Putin in Budapest. When asked if the summit would happen, Trump expressed optimism:
“There’s always a chance. Very good chance.”
He added:
“We’re talking, but we’ll report on that later.”
At the White House, Trump was questioned about Hungary's oil imports from Russia. Rather than offering a direct answer, he responded by commending Orban:
“He’s a great leader.”
Trump also mentioned that the US is considering a sanctions exemption for Hungary related to its purchase of Russian oil:
“We’re looking at it.”
Prime Minister Orban has argued that importing energy from alternative sources is difficult for Hungary due to its landlocked geography. President Trump appeared to agree with Orban’s perspective.
US President Trump remains open to a Budapest summit with President Putin amid ongoing talks, while discussions about Hungary’s Russian oil imports and possible US sanctions exemptions continue.
