Officers in Stockport are investigating after a fire was deliberately started near the Cenotaph in Marple just days before Remembrance Sunday. Emergency services responded at around 9:50 pm on Wednesday, 5 November, following reports of a group of males in the area.
The fire involved a bin and wooden pallets, causing damage to the nearby ground.
Marple neighbourhood officers are appealing for any information related to the incident as they continue their investigation.
The act has led to strong reactions in local Facebook groups and from council members. Marple North councillor Steve Gribbon condemned the attack, writing:
“This is an absolutely disgraceful act and will not be tolerated.”
Police Sergeant Rachel Walton of the Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team described the arson as a reckless act with dangerous potential, saying:
“This was a reckless act that could have ended with more damage and even serious injury. Police units arrived on scene within minutes and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.”
She added that police are working closely with Stockport Council and the fire service to clean and restore the area.
