Rosalía on Meeting Patti Smith
Following the release of her new studio album Lux, Spanish pop artist Rosalía reflected on meeting her musical idol, Patti Smith, describing the experience as “beautiful.” The encounter took place at the famed Electric Lady Studios in New York, a meeting arranged by studio head Lee Foster.
“Break on through to the other side. Going through one door isn’t enough, a million doors aren’t enough.”
This line from a 1976 interview with Smith appears in Rosalía’s song “La Yagular” from Lux, adding a layer of homage to the rock legend. Rosalía revealed during her BBC 6 Music interview with Nick Grimshaw that it was Foster who made the meeting possible: “We met because he wanted us to meet.”
Recalling the moment, Rosalía said she hurried down the stairs in a white dress, nervous not to keep Smith waiting. Upon meeting, Smith complimented her outfit, saying she loved the dress. The two then talked about music and exchanged thoughts, a moment Rosalía described as profoundly inspiring.
